In August 1928, Manuel Chaves set off on a plane journey across Europe to write reports for the Heraldo de Madrid. From Madrid to Baku, via Berlin and Leningrad, he offered firsthand accounts of the political and social state of Europe.
In 1929, he expanded the texts, restored censored parts, and published them as La vuelta a Europa en avión. Un pequeño burgués en la Rusia roja. Much of the book focuses on Russia, where he explored life under the Bolshevik regime and met figures such as Ramón Casanellas.
These pages already show the brilliance of a journalist who would become one of the most important Spanish writers of the 20th century.
